THE CREATION AND THE CROSS

My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work
John 4:34 (NIV)

Whiles on earth, all Jesus sought to do was the work His Father gave Him and to finish it. He indeed finished the work. He said to His father in John 17:4, I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. He emphasized it on the cross when He said It is Finished (John 19:30). What work was it? It was the work of the atonement. He finished it to the latter. Now there is no work to be done again because He finished it.

Just like the creation in Genesis chapters one and two, by the time Adam and Eve came, God had finished all the work. There was absolutely nothing left for Adam and Eve to do. They began life with rest in the garden. That rest however was short-lived, so God began to work again. He sent His Son Jesus to finish the work of atonement so we can have an eternal rest (Mattehew 11:28- 30). So creation is a shadow or symbol of our atonement. Just as Adam and Eve were born into rest without participating in the work, we are also born again into rest without participating in anyway in the work of the cross. Our job is just to believe and enjoy this rest in thanksgiving. It is finished!
