PICK AND CHOOSE

The Funny thing about religious people of today and the law.

First they say, we will follow the law but not all the 613 of them, because we need just the 10 super commandments so we can enjoy our pork.

Then they say okay, let’s add the glorious commandment of 10% tithe to it to make it 11 commandments so at least we can survive financially, since our prosperity depends on that and not the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Then they come again and say, even the 11 will be difficult, so let’s take out the sabbath because on Friday even after 6pm we’ll still be at the shop selling or buying or in the office working. After all we can still get our 10 commandments by adding the tithe to appease God.

You see where religion has led us. We wash down the law to the level we are comfortable with. We are confused and we confuse the world too as we make Christianity look funny by rejecting the simplicity of God’s new way – GRACE.

NOTE: Picking and choosing is not really the way the law works. It’s actually an all-or-nothing proposition:
All who rely on observing the law and not on grace, must do it to the later else are under a curse, for it is written:

“Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do EVERYTHING written in the Book of the Law.” (Galatians 3:10)

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just ONE POINT is guilty of BREAKING ALL OF IT. (James 2:10)

Question: Can they observe all the law?.

Answer: No. In fact it’s impossible. However religion will not allow them to accept  grace as the only way.

Remember we can’t mix the law and grace. Moses brought the law, Jesus brought grace (John 1:17). Marrying to Jesus and flirting with Moses is adultery (Romans 7:1-6).

THE CREATION AND THE CROSS

My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work
John 4:34 (NIV)

Whiles on earth, all Jesus sought to do was the work His Father gave Him and to finish it. He indeed finished the work. He said to His father in John 17:4, I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. He emphasized it on the cross when He said It is Finished (John 19:30). What work was it? It was the work of the atonement. He finished it to the latter. Now there is no work to be done again because He finished it.

Just like the creation in Genesis chapters one and two, by the time Adam and Eve came, God had finished all the work. There was absolutely nothing left for Adam and Eve to do. They began life with rest in the garden. That rest however was short-lived, so God began to work again. He sent His Son Jesus to finish the work of atonement so we can have an eternal rest (Mattehew 11:28- 30). So creation is a shadow or symbol of our atonement. Just as Adam and Eve were born into rest without participating in the work, we are also born again into rest without participating in anyway in the work of the cross. Our job is just to believe and enjoy this rest in thanksgiving. It is finished!

Single Identity

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17

The old is gone, and the new has come. In Christ we are brand new creatures, period! No two ways about that. We don’t have dual identity. It’s either black or white, goat or sheep, darkness or light, Adam or Christ, hell or heaven. We are not the old self and the new self at the same time. We are just the new self.

The doctrine that we are both the old and new self, that is why we struggle with sin is false. We struggle because of our unrenewed mind.

Jesus’ death was once and for all time, so is our old self. Our rescue or deliverance from spiritual death was not progressive, it was instant (Colossians 1:13). It happened right at the moment we made the decision and received Christ. Salvation is instant but growth is progressive. Our learning, renewal of mind, and growing in Christ is progressive. A process that will never end till Jesus’ return.

However, we are not talking about the mind here. Your identity is not your mind or your thoughts. Sin and flesh dwell in the mind, but your identity is your human spirit, which is now brand new because you are in Christ.

If we didn’t have dual identity in Adam, then we don’t have dual identity in Christ. In Adam we were sinners and sinners alone, so we practiced sin. In fact, even when we did good in Adam, it still didn’t change our identity from sinners to saints, or give us dual identity, we were still sinners. In the same way, in Christ, we are saints and saints alone, so we practice righteousness. However, when we sin in Christ, it still doesn’t change our identity from saints to sinners, or give us dual identity, we are still saints.

Christmas: The gift of God’s Grace

This is that time of the year when we meditate upon God’s divinity as compatible to our humanity.

God assumed humanity and lived amongst us for about thirty three (33) years. We call Him Jesus Christ. He was conceived of a virgin, born in a manger, He was fully God and yet fully man.

Such an incredible blessing, and matchless gift from God, because today, we can also participate in this amazing compatibility: we as fully human can now have the life of Christ in us. We carry the divine nature of Jesus Christ. It’s called grace.

Therefore as we celebrate, we reflect on this amazing gift: the gift of God’s grace in the person of Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas????
